Island
Peak (6,189m)
The normal route for climbing Island Peak is South East Flank & South-West Ridge Normally, the base camp is set at Pareshaya Gyab (5,087m), between Imja Tse and the lateral moraine of the Imja Glacier. Proper care should be taken to avoid the possible avalanche in the event of heavy snow fall. From the base camp, a well acclimatized party in good conditions can make the summit and return to the base camp in a day. However, most of the climbers prefer alpine style camping at high camp which adds the joy of climbing and helps a safe ascent. Itinerary Day
01: Fly to Lukla (2800 m.).
Take an easy walk to Phakding. Day
03: Rest and acclimatization at
Namche Bazaar. A pleasant day can be spent exploring the village, talking
to the Sherpas and marveling at the incredible scenery. Day
04: It is a steep one hour walk to Synagboche. The trail descends gradually
to Phunki Thanga and then climbs steeply at first and then gradually ascends
through forest and mani stones to Tengboche (3870m.). The views of the
Himalayas including Kwangde (6,187m.), Everest (8,848m.), Nuptse (7,879m.),
Lhotse, Tawache, Amadablam are magnificient from here. Day
05: We pass through
the forest of briches, conifers & rhododendrons with possible sights
of snow pigeons, golden eagles, goshawks in tha trail. The route climbs
past some magnificiently carved mani stones to Pangboche and then enters
alpine medows to Pheriche (4,240m). Day
06: Walk up a small ridge and then contour round the base of the
Khumbu Glacier. From here, take a short steep climb to the terminal moraine
of the glacier from where the views are stunning. Arrive at Lobuje (4,930
m ). Day
07: Walk up to Gorakhshep (5,288 m) and take a climb to Kalapathar
(5,545 m). The view from the top
of Kalapathar surpasses anything one can imagine. Huge glacier
ice flows all around. The mountains of Pumori (7,145 m ), Lingtren (6,
697 m) and Khumbutse (6,623 m) stand close to Tibet. Capture the most
beautiful view of Sagarmatha, the roof of the world. Return to Lobuche. Day
08: Retrace path to Dingboche. Cost
